Facebook Is Your Dating Oracle

Thu, May 27, 2010

According an investigative report conducted by Fortune magazine’s David Kirkpatrick, Facebook is able to predict — with a surprising level of accuracy — who you will be dating in the weeks to come. This report indicates that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg engaged in this analysis purely for “fun”. He utilized Facebook’s vast data pool in order ascertain patterns which indicate two given users are about to hook up.

Through the analysis of Facebook’s large pool of information including friend statuses and communication patterns, he was able to predict who a Facebook user would be dating during the subsequent week — with a respectable 33% accuracy rate. Seeing that many of us can’t even begin to guess who we’ll date next week with that level of certainty, this represents quite an analytical coup. This has put further thoughts into the geek minds at Facebook.

Zuckerberg has now created an entire “data science team” within Facebook in order to further this type of analysis. Although initially just done for “fun”, one can imagine the targeted advertising opportunities when a company knows your dating life better than you do. Whereas many might feel that this represents a serious invasion of privacy, daters should keep their minds open. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a company like Facebook be able to accurately predict and tell you who you’ll be dating next week allowing you to skip the hassle of figuring it out on your own?
